Is there a way to know if the email server needs authentication?

What kind of a task are you trying to accomplish? Mail protocols are different, some always require authentication (like IMAP and POP3 which are used to receive email), while SMTP (for sending email) usually requires authentication but sometimes doesn't.

Generally speaking, the best way to ensure that is to check with people responsible for that SMTP server. If it's some email service, you can check their help pages, and if it's a company server, system administrator should be able to tell you that. Or, you could simply try sending mail out without authentication and see if it goes through. Typical scenario is SMTP auth required for sending outside of the domain, and not required for local mailing.
