WebMail Lite (PHP) system requirements:
- PHP 4.3.0 or higher;
- POP3 and SMTP ports open;
- FTP or CPanel access which allows assigning necessary permissions to files and folders.
Please let us know what exactly goes wrong during installation so we could assist you in this.
Regards,
Igor

It seems that your server environment doesn't allow running scripts located in directory with 777 permissions for security reasons. You should try setting 755 permissions for webmailphp folder and perhaps all of its subfolders. Please let us know if the error message persists.
Or, you may contact your web hosting provider for recommendations.
Regards,
Igor

ok so i have set all of the folders to 755 and now i'm getting the following
_________________________________________
The web-server has no permission to write into the settings file
or
settings file not exists
/var/data/settings/settings.xml
or
Language file (English.php) not exists
To learn how to grant the appropriate permission, please refer to WebMail documentation:
Installation Instructions for Windows
Installation Instructions for Unix

so it looks like part of it is working now

It seems that the path specified is incorrect. You should specify a full filesystem path and not the one based on document root. If you're unaware of your filesystem path, put a simple .php script into the web folder of your WebMail Lite installation and navigate to this script using your web browser:
Search for "DOCUMENT_ROOT" setting in the resulting page, it shows full filesystem path to the web folder.
It's not recommended to put data folder inside document root (public_html) for security reasons.

WebMail Lite (unlike WebMail Pro) does not use any database at all (including MySQL). Therefore, the corresponding settings are disabled in Admin Console.

The only difference is configuring a database connection. WebMail Pro installation instructions are available here.
Best regards,
