I'm considering purchasing xmail server and have two questions.

First, does it support windows server 2008 x64 with SQL Server 2008 backend?

Second, what do you use for spam control? I already have a spamassassin installation; would this work with that? If not, does it have a similiar level of protection?

Yes. But, due to heavy security policy applied by Windows Server 2008, we wouldn't recommend to install the product into Program Files directory, we suggest to use other drive than system one for this.

We are using Bogofilter for this. It works differently comparing to SpamAssasin, it can be trained to distinguish spam from not spam using WebMail Pro interface and pressing "Spam"/"Not Spam" buttons there. Spamfilter maintains spam patterns database, calculates spam score for incoming messages and adds special header to the message so that WebMail Pro or any other mailer can check this spam score. Of course, it will take significant number of messages to be processed in order to provide decent spam detection.

Does it ship with any sort of training already accomplished or would I be pretty much starting from scratch with that?

Thanks,

Also, if I decided to just do webmail pro now, but later decide to change my backend server to xmail, is that an upgrade option for just the price difference?

No, we don't ship trained spam databases because everyone has its own spam. Even in different mailboxes on the same mail server we have different spam and filter trained for one mailbox doesn't have necessary accuracy for another one.

Yes, exactly.
