Good day!

Have been running DL's XMail 1.26 (compiled from source with some personal hacks) for internal network on Ubuntu Hardy AMD64 box without incident.

Need IMAP server and decided to evaluate AL's XMail Pro version (with an eye towards purchase if it works as advertised).

Downloaded the v. 3.38 installer and installed to new folder.

Since Apache is not installed, copied "Domains" folder and some of the user, domains, etc. (but not server) tabs to new installation.

POP3 works fine and IMAP is running but does not respond to commands (other than "CAPABILITY" and "LOGOUT") after "LOGIN" (please see console session below).

-----------------------------------------
$ nc localhost 143
* OK XMail IMAP Server ready Fri, 15 May 2009 05:51:27 -0400
. LOGIN [USERNAME] [PASSWORD]
. OK LOGIN completed
. CAPABILITY
* CAPABILITY IMAP4rev1
. OK CAPABILITY completed
. SELECT INBOX
^] (here it hangs and have to enter "^]" to end session)
OK LOGOUT completed
$
-----------------------------------------

I suspicion that this happens because the evaluation key was not entered (no Apache).

If I'm right, is there any way to enter the key manually?

Thank you.

Most probably, this is caused by insufficient write permissions over MailRoot directory or some specific location under it, in particular:

/var/MailRoot/domainName/userAccount/Maildir/.info.tab

Ownership of MailRoot directory should be the same as credentials specified in "User" and "Group" lines of server.tab, it's "apache" by default but you can set any other value there according to MailRoot ownership and system account XMail Server is running under.

Please let us know if this helps you.

Thank you for your prompt reply Igor!

Until I get it to work as advertised, I'm running it as root (it's an internal network anyways).

Installed the Win32 version on an old XP box, pointed the management panel to the Linux XMail Pro control IP and deleted and rebuilt all domains and users.

IMAP is now responding to commands but it's performance is not robust. It crashes periodically when using Thunderbird 2.0.0.21. It does not copy more than 10 messages from another server and sometimes none even from another XM Pro account. Messages disappear in some accounts although they are physically on the server.

Using Sylpheed 2.60 it doesn't crash as much but it still manifests all the other problems.

I am confused as to whether the Demo is somehow crippled or whether IMAP functionality is a work in progress?

Whatever assistance you can provide is greatly welcomed.

My best regards.

I've just got a word from XMail Server developers team, it seems like they've found the reason of the issue. They've already come up with a fix for it, it will take a day or two to test it through. Once we get any news on this, we'll let you know.

We've just released a new version of XMail Server Pro, you can download it at here. Be sure to stop XMail service before installing newer version of the product.

Please let us know if the issue persists in this version.

Good day and thank you Igor!

Installed the new version (by the way, it overwrote the existing tabs without warning).
Anyways, got it to work eventually.

IMAP functionality is slightly more stable than in the previous version -- but just slightly. It still crashes more often than not, and has difficulties copying and deleting messages.

I do not think it is yet ready for production use. Hopefully, as the code matures the developers will improve it to the point that it becomes rock-solid -- I'll check back here periodically to see how it comes along.

Regards.
