Thought I would try the webmail beta 8 and see how it is standing up. I have been using webmail lite for a while for a home mail server and really like it. A recent move to a new Linux based server using the iredmail postfix et al packages resulted in my having a real good look at both Sogo and Roundcube - neither fo which I like as much as webmail-lite.

I have tried to install the beta at least three times now, and I keep hitting a problem with signing in to the mail accounts. I can logon fine, read mail and generally play with existing messages, but I am unable to send any messages at all.

Mailserver is on the local host.

Any ideas?

Thank you

We recommend to sign in as superadmin, enable logging, set Verbosity to Debug, then log back as your email user, reproduce the problem and check the logs.

If you let us know what's in the log file we may be able to help you further.

Thanks, I did all that to start with. Gives nothing useful. Just what it says above in the original post. All it says of relevance in the main log is connection refused. User log says the same ... I will create a new test account for the purposes of running the failure, copy and post the full logs and delete the account soon - it shows passwords and usernames in plain text so I do not want to use my usual test account ... will get back to you soon. Thank you

Well, "Connection refused" message usually means the port is blocked by a firewall; this may be happening on the server itself, or externally. It's not unusual for ISPs and hosting providers to block SMTP ports for spam prevention purposes.

No chance of the SMTP being blocked. It is physically on the same VMware virtual Ubuntu 16.04.02 server. The installation is restricted to localhost anyway. The server was built as a clean install using a minimal Ubuntu 16.04.02 installation iso and now has just the OS/kernel and the iRedmail installation on it with the addition of this Webmail Beta.

Each web app is in its own sub directory and appropriately locked down. I have added a few minor tweaks to the iRedmail system top harden it like stopping Apache show listings, but that is all. I have also successfully installed the old Webmail lite php without any trouble at all.

The machine can go out, but the server is behind a firewall to stop any inbound SMTP traffic to it anyway. It serves a local domain only. It doesn't seem to like the Port 587 and I am not opening up 465 as that has been depreciated anyway and reassigned as I understand it.

I have checked and rechecked the iptables output using -L -n switches and there is no sign of Webmail 8 being blocked - which given it is on localhost and that is set as an ignoreip in fail2ban is exactly as it should be.

I very much doubt it is a firewall issue, it is not going outside for SMTP anyway and it is not even able to send a message to an internal user on the same server.

Anyway, here is the main Webmail 8 Beta log. I cleared everything and then tried to send a message. No log entries were created for the user activity log.

According to the logs, when sender and recipient info is submitted by WebMail, Postfix responds:

Code:
< 554 5.7.1 <unknown[127.0.0.1]>: Client host rejected: Access denied\r\n

That looks like SMTP server configuration issue. One of the ways around that could help is enabling SMTP authentication in settings of WebMail account. Also, you may want to check smtpd_client_restrictions entry in Postfix configuration.

Will do. Thx. I'll let you know what I find. I think I already tried the enabling SMTP authentication, but I will try again ...
