Many email clients provide anti-spam functionality these days. Is this probably about one of our email applications?

MailSuite Pro for Windows can block incoming SPAM, this is implemented using bayesian spam filtering solution, bogofilter. Unfortunately, it has a number of bugs, and since it's a third-party tool we're unable to fix those. In future versions, we plan to integrate SpamAssassin instead.

My hosting service, Arvixe.com, provides AfterLogic WebMail Pro for my domains. Does WebMail Pro have any SPAM filtering capabilities yet? If so, do I need to get the hosting service to set it up or can I do it?

SPAM filtering doesn't seem to be working at all. There is a Spam folder, but only way it gets used is when I select messages and click SPAM. But it doesn't block anything by itself or learn from my input.

Thanks.

Terry

It's mail server's job to put emails to Spam folder. WebMail Pro is just a visual interface to mailbox, it does not replace the mail server.

Many email services offer antispam tools. For instance, if you access GMail via their web interface, you are able to mark a message or a number of those as spam. Usually, that trains spamfilter, and the more you use that "Mark as Spam" button, the better spam detection results are.

And actually, you don't have to use their web interface to train GMail spamfilter, that can be done with any IMAP client, WebMail Pro for instance. Simply move a message to Spam folder, that's going to have a training effect. WebMail Pro has "Spam" button, but the only thing it does is moving message to Spam folder with a single click, and the rest is up to mail server.

Unfortunately, it's not a common approach, as many mail servers require special ways of telling them "Hey, this message is SPAM!". So eventually, everything depends on what mail server and email client you use. Webmail software might be equipped with plugin to cooperate with particular antispam software, that's the case with our MailSuite Pro for Windows bundle: it comes with built-in spamfilter and webmail client, and the latter was specifically modified to interact with the former.

is it safe for us to update the bogofilter files manually (since its open source)?

Well, since it's open source, you should check product documentation and its sources to get an answer to that. Issues with original bogofilter were among the reasons MailSuite Pro for Windows was discontinued, though.
